Armed Forces Day 2002

The day Thule Air Base celebrates Armed Forces Day doesn’t take place on the same day as the rest of armed forces celebrates the day.
At
Thule, the base invites the local hunters from Qaanaaq, Savigsivik, Moriussaq and Siorapaluk to come and celebrate the day with people from the base. Because it takes several days for hunters to travel to Thule (on Dog-sled that is), the event is held during Easter.
Most events take place on Sea ice in North Star Bay. Some of the events are Sack-race, Rope-pull, Muckluck-hockey and a dog sled race.

Below you will find a few pictures from the events of 2002

The battle is on, “Muckluk hockey” is a mix of Hockey, Soccer and Spring cleaning.
You play hockey with a broom on an ice rink,
only you don’t wear skates, but VERY slippery boots.

Out on the track (2002), 12 sleds raced for the prices.

I year 2008 a total of 32 sleds were competing for 1 cal. 30.06 stainless steele rifle, 1 cal. 17 Rifle,
and 2 sets of binoculars, all sponsored by “Operation Julemand".

On top of this, all participants got a "loewenmesser pocket knife" as an extra prize.
(if you have been in Greenland, you know the importance of a knife,
"no knife, no food !")

By the way, during FY08, Operation Julemand raised more than $23.000,-, 100% going to charity for the kids in Qaanaaq Municipality !
